The European Parliament aims at strengthening legislation on deforestation through imports.
Initially targeting six agricultural commodities (including leather, wood or palm oil), the scope of the text could now be extended to other products (such as sheep or goat meat, rubber, printed paper), other actors (financial institutions) and other issues (respect of human rights).
The objective? That all companies demonstrate, with evidence, that their products are not linked to any deforestation or land degradation.
This is a challenging exercise in traceability up to the source, which many sectors will potentially have to tackle from 2024!
