Biodiversity losses represent a direct threat to human beings, whose survival relies on no less than 50 000 wild species of plants and animals (including… 1500 species of fungi!).
For 5 broad categories of practices (such as harvesting, fishing, logging, but also non-extractive ones, such as… observing), the report provides analyses and trends in the use of these wild species, then emphasizing which actions, policies and tools need to be implemented and “scaled-up across practices, regions and sectors”.
The call to biodiversity protection is urgent, but also very challenging, since upcoming pressures such as “climate change, increasing demand and technological advances” are already identified as potential brakes to the adoption of sustainable use practices.
