Sustainable sourcing practices in the textile industry

The textile industry is adopting sustainable sourcing practices but “change is not happening fast enough“.

Key highlights from Textile Exchange latest report include:

  • The use of the so-called “prefered materials” is still increasing, but so does the use of conventional ones.
  • Only 18% of the land used to source cotton, wool or wood-based fiber is covered by sustainability schemes, with the greatest room for improvement associated with wool and the land under sheep grazing.
  • Identifying the country of origin is a real challenge, unmet yet for more than half of materials sources. When traced back, India and China are the top two origins.

Textile Exchange underlines that more individual and collective action from companies is now being needed, with an “urgent” support of external enablers.
